Raise your hand if 2014 kicked you so hard in the behind you hardly know what hit you. Keep your hand up if this past year handed you so many pieces of baggage you now feel like you have crossed into 2015 juggling and balancing a tower of garbage.
That’s a lot of hands.
At least I’m guessing there is. Because most of the time that’s how we feel.
A new year has just begun. It’s just a baby still. Fresh and new. We don’t know what kind of things will fill our days and preoccupy our time. We don’t know what kind of joy awaits us and most fretfully what kind of heart ache and trouble we will face. I see people writing things on Facebook like “2015 is my year!!” and “This year I’m going to be happy!” and “This is going to be a year of no stress!”
It’s a weird kind of name it, claim it type of resolution making. If we just tell ourselves positive things, those things will surely come true. Right?
Until they don’t come true. Because no matter how optimistic you make your thought life, friends still get sick, terrorist still attack the innocent and families still produce drama.
No, I’m not here to dash your greatest dreams and damn all your hopes to hell. But we all know that in this world we will have trouble. And when we welcome a new year we do so knowing that this year, just like last year, will test us in ways unimaginable. Our kids, our health, our finances, our happiness, our jobs, our spouses and friends are not sure things. Nothing in this life is.
Except for one thing.
Wait for it…
Yes, I went there. Easy answer you say? Good. It’s supposed to be.
Because no matter how complicated your current trial is, it pales in comparison to the suffering of Christ and His actions on your behalf, as well as the hope you have in the home He is making for you in Heaven right now as you read this.
I’m not trivializing your needs. However we all must pause and remember the truth we say we believe, no matter how elementary it may seem. Put down that tower of garbage, if only for a moment and smile in remembrance of those truths. Forget happiness (if that’s what your after) and let the joy that comes in knowing within the core of your Spirit what kind of hope awaits you, overflow.
If joy does not spring from that knowledge, then ask yourself if you even truly believe it.
What if our resolutions for the year had less to do with material happiness, weight goals and organization dreams and more to do with LIVING everyday in the truth that we have been crucified with Christ, are no longer subject to His wrath and now have a firm faith and anticipation of Heaven and His coming Glory!
What if in the midst of our deep weakness we truly believed that His grace is sufficient for every one of our needs, fears and doubts. Now and soon-to-be. And that His power is somehow made perfect in our weakness. That’s how good He is.
Then what would happen?
I think we would be unstoppable.
So Happy New Year readers! Go forward into this baby fresh 2015 with full hope, because the Lord has most certainly got it covered.
